MANSFIELD – West Chester rallied from a 5-0 deficit to beat Mansfield 10-6 in the nightcap of a PSAC East doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Shaute Field.
The Golden Rams also won the opener 15-6 to sweep the twinbill.
In the nightcap, Mansfield scored in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run by
Matt Fisher over the left field fence. The Mountaineers added three more runs with two outs in the bottom of the second staring with a
Jon Taddeo double to center. Taddeo took third on a wild pitch and scored on an error by the West Chester first baseman. Fisher later drove in two more runs with a single to increase the lead to 5-0.
Mansfield starter
Danny Brown looked impressive early, holding West Chester to one hit and striking out four in the first two innings including striking out the side in order in the second inning.
But in the third, West Chester used the long ball to jump back into the game getting a leadoff home run from Josh Heyne and a three-run shot by Joe Wendle later in the inning to score seven runs and take a 7-5 lead.
Mansfield got a run in the bottom of the third to close to 7-6 bit could pull no closer. Fisher went 2-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead the Mountaineers offense. Brown went four innings to take the loss striking out six.
In the opener, Mansfield took a 1-0 lead when
Conor Thompson doubled and later scored on a double by
Joel Worthington. Mountaineer starter
Joe Candelmo held West Chester scoreless over the first two innings but the Golden Rams got four runs in the third with two of them coming off a single by Justin Lamborn.
West Chester added a run in the fourth to take a 5-1 advantage but Mansfield rallied in the bottom half of the inning to scoring five runs with
Joel Worthington and
Dylan Woodworth each delivering two-run doubles to retake the lead at 6-5.
But West Chester exploded for 10 runs over the next three innings with Reid Pulford drilling a grand slam in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Candelmo went 4.2 inninngs to take the loss striking out eight batters over that span.
Stephen Stopper and Worthington each had two hits for the Mountaineers.
Mansfield falls to 6-14 overall and 0-4 in the PSAC East. The Mountaineers host LeMoyne in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday.
