Mansfield Sweeps Twinbill Against Salem International

GREER, SC – Junior Conor Thompson hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Mountaineers past a pesky Salem International 9-8 in extras. In the nightcap, four different Mounties recorded three runs each as Mansfield used a six-run opening inning to coast to a 17-8 win over the Tigers.

Salem put a run on the board in the top of the second, but the Mounties hung seven on the board in the bottom of the third inning to take a commanding lead over the Tigers.

Dylan Woodworth got the party started with a 2 RBI single to right field that brought home Jon Taddeo and Jordan Miller. Woodworth scored on a wild pitch not long after.

Matt Fisher and Ernie Ruch each scored on errors by the Tigers defense in the inning. Fisher went two-for-five in the opening contest with two doubles while adding two runs.

Taddeo hit a two-run single to right field bringing home Thompson and Levi Weiskopff in his second at bat of the inning.
Salem brought in one run in the fourth before exploding for six runs in the sixth to lead Mansfield 8-7.

The Mounties tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when senior Brian Milliman brought home Fisher with a double down the left field line.

Senior Andy Young struck out the side in the top of the 7th, but Mansfield failed to bring home a run in the bottom of the inning despite having runners on the corners.

Jon Moser drew a lead-off walk in the bottom of the 8th before Stephen Stopper advanced the runner to third with a single through the left side. Thompson stroked the Salem pitch down the left field line bringing home Jeremy Mapstone, who pinch ran for Moser, and securing the Mountaineer victory.

Young earned the victory, pitching 2.1 innings and striking out five-of-eight batters faced. Mansfield's starting pitcher Danny Brown threw 5.2 innings giving up just five hits but was saddled with six earned runs. Brown sat down seven batters while on the mound.

Salem's Joshua Karlin was tabbed with the loss.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Mansfield put up six runs in the top of the inning before adding four more in the third. The Mounties didn't relent, scoring seven more runs in the final four innings.

The Tigers put up eight runs in the nightcap including a solo shot over the right field wall by Zac Travino in the third.

Mansfield's offense was too much for Salem as the Mounties came away with the 17-8 run to improve to 3-0 overall.

Freshman Louis Sick earned the first win of his career pitching 2.2 innings, giving up one earned run and striking out two. Starting pitcher Mike Martin was tabbed with a no decision, giving up four earned runs and seven hits while striking out four batters in 3.1 innngs.

Sophomore Tyler Palermo took the loss for Salem.

Woodoworth, Ruch, Moser and Joel Worthing all recorded three runs  each in the winning effort. Anthony Renz added two runs while Milliman, Stopper and Taddeo each added one run apiece.

The Mountaineers conclude their South Carolina trip when they face Virginia State tomorrow afternoon at 12 pm.
