Mountie Women Rally Past Kutztown 62-59

Box Score

KUTZTOWN – The Mansfield University women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit in the first half to overcome PSAC East rival Kutztown University 62-59 on the road Wednesday night at Keystone Arena. Senior Mallory Moore scored a game-high 18 points and 13 rebounds – 10 offensive – for her seventh double-double of the season.

With the victory, head coach Ruth Hermansen leads the Mounties to the first 10+ win season since the 2006-07 campaign that saw Mansfield go 13-14 overall.

The opening eight minutes of play saw seven lead changes as neither team held more than a one possession lead. Knotted at 11-11 with 11:56 remaining in the half, Kutztown went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes.

Although they allowed a big run to the Golden Bears, Mansfield never retreated; in fact it lit a spark. The Mountaineers used a 21-5 run to close out the half and take a six-point lead into the break.

In the second half, Kutztown closed the gap to tie the Mounties at 33 all with 14:41 left in the game. However, Mansfield refused to let Kutztown take over the lead, quickly building a two-possession lead.

The Mountaineers led by as many as seven points three different times in the half, but a pesky Bears' defense wouldn't allow Mansfield to go up by any more.

Trailing by three points with two second remaining in the contest, Kutztown's Andrea Sisson put up a 3-point shot as time expired that would force overtime, but the ball rattled out and Mansfield came away with the win.

Mansfield held a 55-37 rebounding advantage over the Bears.

Freshman Alyssa DeRichie posted 11 points, six rebounds and three steals after missing the last three games with an injury.

Junior Julia Stevenson and sophomore Jena Matter each came up short of double-doubles on the night. Stevenson recorded 10 points and nine rebounds while Matter had nine points and 13 boards.

Senior Meredith Hafer recorded a team-high four steals while adding five points and six steals.

Kutztown's Avery Hodgson led three players in double figures with her 16 points.

Mansfield will host West Chester for senior day and the season finale on Saturday.
