MANSFIELD –
Mallory Moore recorded a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds but the Mountaineers fell just short of upsetting PSAC East leading Bloomsburg in a thrilling 62-59 decision Wednesday night at Decker Gymnasium.
Tied 4-4 just two minutes into the game, Mansfield (9-14, 6-13 PSAC) went on a 15-1 run over the next eight minutes to lead the stunned Huskies by 14 points.
Bloomsburg (21-4, 15-4 PSAC) had trouble getting anything going against a tough Mountaineer defense that held the Huskies to just 28.6% from the field in the first half. In comparison, Mansfield connected on 51.9% of their shots in the half.
The Mountaineers held a double-digit lead for the majority of the first half, taking a 34-23 advantage into the break.
Senior
Morgan Hafer came up big in the first half, knocking down two 3-pointers and a jumper for eight points. Hafer hit another three in the second half to finish the game with 11 points.
Mansfield continued to roll in the second half building their lead up to 14 points with 12:42 remaining in the contest. However, a 12-0 run put the Huskies within a bucket of Mansfield at the 9:38 mark.
Brianna Dudeck's lay-up with 3:46 remaining gave Bloomsburg their first lead of the game since the opening seconds of the first half at 56-55.
After trading buckets, Mansfield regained the lead once again on a
Marrysa Moyer lay-up with just over two minutes to play. It would be the last lead the Mountie held in the contest.
Bloomsburg's Kelsey Gallagher put the Huskies on top with a lay-up then hit a jumper the next possession to make it a three point game with one minute remaining. Gallagher finished with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Moore managed to get a shot off despite being tied-up in double coverage, but it fell just short as Bloomsburg escaped with the victory.
With the loss, Mansfield is eliminated from earning a berth in the PSAC Championships.
Moyer and sophomore
Jena Matter each chipped in eight points with Matter reining in eight boards.
Along with her game-high 20 points, Moore also recorded four assists, four steals, and two blocks.
The Huskies' Dana Wieller hit three 3-pointers while going on to score a team-high 17 points.
Mansfield continues PSAC East play when it travels to Millersville Saturday.
