FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mansfield falls to No.15 Edinboro in PSAC Opener

MANSFIELD – Samantha Blazetic scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as No. 15 Edinboro came away with a 91-61 victory over the Mountaineers in both team's PSAC opener Saturday afternoon at Decker Gymnasium.

Senior Kayla Espigh went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc as she led Mansfield in scoring with 13 points. Fellow senior Julia Stevenson was the only other Mountie to hit double-figure scoring with her 11 points.

Junior Jena Matter was a point and a rebound shy of her second career double-double with nine points and nine boards on the day. Shaleta Heyward had eight points while Alyssa DeRichie and Bridget Carney each chipped in seven points apiece.

The Mountaineers struggled to find consistency from field goal as they shot 32.7% (17-52) from the floor. Edinboro forced 31 turnovers while being credited with 39 points off turnovers.

Mansfield defended the perimeter well though, holding the Fighting Scots to just 20% (4-20) from 3-point.

Both teams recorded 41 total rebounds in the contest.

Edinboro's Darche' Jackson was 8-of-9 from the floor as she totaled 18 points off the bench while Kerry Connolly recorded 11 points.

The Mounties hung tough with the nationally-ranked program as Edinboro's lead never grew larger than six points throughout the first 13 minutes of the game. Mansfield closed within one point on an Espigh 3-pointer with 9:15 remaining in the first half, but the Scots promptly went on a 15-2 run over the next five minutes to lead by 14.

The Mountaineers cut their deficit to single-digits twice after the run, but Edinboro took a 46-33 lead into the half.

In the second half, Edinboro continued to improve upon their lead and ultimately came away with the 91-61 win.

Mansfield is back in action tomorrow when it hosts Slippery Rock at Decker for a 1:00 p.m. tip.
