VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior Jena Matter led Mansfield in scoring with a game-high 14 points, but Division I Binghamton outpaced the Mountaineers 70-45 Tuesday night in exhibition play at the BU Events Center.
 
Mansfield scored the first points of the game as freshman Katie Fitzpatrick collected a missed shot and laid the ball in for two points. The Mounties maintained their lead for the opening minutes of the game and led by as many as five points with 12:32 remaining in the first half.
 
The Bearcats took advantage of the open perimeter, hitting five 3-pointers in the half. Binghamton went on a 21-7 run over the final 12 minutes of the half to take a 30-21 lead into the break.
 
In the second half, Binghamton continued to capitalize on the 3-point basket, jumping out to a 46-26 lead with 13:48 to play in the second. Shaleta Heyward's jumper cut Mansfield's deficit to just 13 points with eight minutes remaining, but the Mounties could pull no closer.
 
Matter connected on 60% (6-10) of her shots from the floor and hit two free throws to total 14 points on the night. The junior also brought down five rebounds while recording three assists.
 
Heyward hit two 3-pointers and a field goal to total eight points for Mansfield. Sophomore Alyssa DeRichie and freshman Katie Fitzpatrick each chipped in five points.
 
Stephanie Jensen and Jasbriell Swain led Binghamton in scoring with 14 points apiece. Jensen was hot from beyond the arc, hitting five-of-10 attempts.
 
The Mountaineers shot 40.5% (17-42) from the floor and 45.5% (5-11) from 3-point.
 
Mansfield opens up their regular season slate when it travels to Lock Haven on Saturday, Nov. 17 for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
