MANSFIELD – Senior
Julia Stevenson recorded a double-double including a game-high 23 points to lead five Mountaineers in double-figures in Mansfield's 79-52 non-conference win over Houghton Tuesday night in Decker Gymnasium.
“We did a good job of executing our game plan tonight and getting a lot of players involved in scoring,” said head coach
Alison Tagliaferri. “One of our goals after the first game was to play consistently in both halves of games and we achieved that tonight.”
Mansfield, which never trailed in the game, built a 18-8 lead on a 3-pointer by senior
Kayla Espigh nine minutes into the game and would extended that lead to 43-23 at halftime. Stevenson was a dominate force in the first half hitting 7-9 shots from the floor and scoring 17 points while junior
Jena Matter scored all 10 of her points in the first half.
The Mountaineers used a 9-0 run in the first two minutes of the second half to take a 52-23 lead on a 3-pointer by freshman
Katie Fitzpatrick and would increase their advantage to 62-28 on a layup by
Victoria Lacey with just under 14 minutes to play.
Mansfield held a 44-25 advantage in rebounding and recorded 14 steals in the game.
Stevenson ended the game with 23 points and 11 rebounds with Espigh adding 12 points, all of them coming on 3-pointers. Lacey scored a career-best 11 points. Fitzpatrick and Matter each scored 10 points.
Kristen Moose led Houghton (2-1) with 19 points while Maisi Pipher scored 12 points.
Tagliaferri, who is Mansfield's all-time leading scorer, got her first win as the head coach of Mountaineers.
Mansfield (1-1) host nationally ranked Edinboro in the PSAC opener for both teams this Saturday.
