Field Hockey Wins Big on Senior Day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Field Hockey Wins Big on Senior Day

MANSFIELD – Kristy Tutorow scored two of the Mountaineers seven goals on the day as the Mansfield University field hockey team game away with a 7-2 victory over Mercyhurst University on senior day at Spaulding Field.

Tutorow, Kristyn Grunza, Alycia Pici, Talena Truitt and Jamie Twist were all honored in a senior day ceremony prior to the start of the game.

Mercyhurst (6-12, 3-7 PSAC West) took the early lead when Kelley Hines found the back of the cage to put the Lakers on top.

But Mercyhurst's lead was short-lived as Kristyn Grunza scored her eighth goal of the season to knot the game at 1-1 at the 19 minute mark in the first. Just before halftime, Kayla Grunza put the Mounties on top with her first goal of the season.

In the second half, it was all Mansfield (6-12, 2-8 PSAC West) as the Mountaineers registered four goals in an 11 minute span to jump out to a 6-1 lead over Mercyhurst.

Tutorow started the onslaught with back-to-back goals in the 37th and 42nd minutes followed by junior Brianna Velepec's score in the 46th minute. Sophomore Tori Malatesta notched her second goal of the year with a successful penalty swipe attempt in the 47th minute.

Sophomore Lillian Hines scored her first career goal in the 60th minute to give the Mountaineers a commanding 7-1 advantage over the Lakers.

Mercyhurst's Meghan Smith lifted the ball over the keeper's head in the final seconds of the contest to make it a 7-2 final.

Mansfield's offense controlled the flow of the game holding a 25-12 shot advantage with 15 shots coming in the first half.

Senior Jamie Twist made six saves in 70 minutes in goal to earn the victory. Junior Ashley Bronston came up with a defensive save in the 61st minute to prevent a Mercyhurst score.

Mansfield finishes with a 6-12 overall mark for the second straight season and records six wins for the third consecution year.

Following the game the Mountaineer field hockey team presented a $568.47 check to Traci's Hope, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to help people diagnosed with breast cancer. The team raised the money by selling Stick it to Cancer t-shirts and by hosting a Shootout Breast Cancer Challenge at halftime.
