Mounties Drop Tough 2-1 Decision at Slippery Rock
SLIPPERY ROCK – Junior
Taryn Schawillie scored her 43
rd career goal to tie Gretchen Reschke (1999-2002) in all-time scoring, but the Mounties dropped a tough 2-1 decision on the road at PSAC West rival No. 8 Slippery Rock Wednesday afternoon.
Mansfield (5-12, 1-8 PSAC West) outshot The Rock 20-12 and held a 14-5 penalty corner advantage in the contest. The Mounties recorded 15 shots and nine corners in the second half alone.
Slippery Rock (8-8, 5-4 PSAC West) got on the board first after Lindsay Brown scored in the 13
th minute off a Rock penalty corner attempt. Just over a minute later, The Rock took a two-goal lead on a Rebecca Williams score which would hold up until halftime.
Schawillie notched her 15
th goal of the season in the 57
th minute on a
Kristyn Grunza assist to cut Slippery Rock's lead to just one score. Schawillie, who currently leads the Mountaineers in season scoring, has not scored less than 13 goals during a season in her career. Grunza leads the team and ranks 7
th in the conference in assists with eight.
Junior
Sarah Zwick recorded her team-leading eighth defensive save of the season against The Rock. In her last outing Zwick recorded an incredible three defensive saves at Shippensburg.
Slippery Rock's Courtney Lee made 12 saves while allowing just on score in 70 minutes of play.
The Mounties will host Mercyhurst on Saturday, Oct. 20 at noon in their final game of the season. Prior to the game all five Mountaineers seniors will be honored. It will also be Play for the Cure day, with all proceeds from the day's events going to cancer research.
