Stevenson and Moyer record double-doubles but Mounties fall at Clarion 79-69
CLARION –
Julia Stevenson (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) and
Marrysa Moyer(Altoona/Altoona) each recorded double-doubles but it wouldn't be enough to overcome a cold-shooting night as Mansfield fell to Clarion 79-69 in a women's PSAC crossover basketball game Friday evening at Clarion.
Mansfield trailed 27-15 thirteen minutes into the game before cutting the score to 34-27 on a pair of
Mallory Moore free throws with 2:35 remaining in the first half. Clarion's Emma Fickel hit three 3-pointers in the final 95 seconds before intermission to give the Golden Eagles a 43-27 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, Clarion would increase its lead to 65-41 with just under eight minutes to play before the Mountaineers would put together a 24-7 run over the next seven minutes to close the gap to 72-65 on a 3-pointer by
Morgan Hafer with 1:17 to play.
Mansfield pulled to within six points at 73-67 on two free throws by Moore with 36 seconds remaining but could pull not closer.
The Mountaineers struggled from the floor connecting on just 31.9% (22-69) of their shots while Clarion hit 50% (26-52) of its attempts. Mansfield held a 44-36 rebounding advantage and recorded 14 steals.
Senior
Mallory Moore (Beech Creek/Central Mountain), the PSAC's leading scorer, led the Mountaineers in scoring with 16 points including a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line. She also pulled down eight rebounds with four assists and two steals.
Stevenson recorded her third double-double of the season with 13 points to go along with a career-best 13 rebounds. Moyer, a freshman, also posted her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 boards.
Clarion (4-7, 3-4 PSAC) had five players score in double-figures topped by Fickel who scored 16 points. Hannah Heeter recorded a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds while Lauren Savulchak also scored 15 points.
Mansfield (4-7, 1-6 PSAC) travels to Gannon on Saturday.
