EAST STROUDSBURG –
Mallory Moore led four Mountaineers in double-figure scoring to give Mansfield (5-8, 2-7 PSAC) a 70-58 victory over East Stroudsburg (5-8, 2-7 PSAC) in PSAC East divisional play.
The first half at Koehler Fieldhouse was an intense back-and-forth battle that saw eight lead changes.
Jena Matter's jumper at the 16:49 mark put the Mounties up five, which would be the largest lead either team held in the first 20 minutes of play. After four lead changes, senior
Morgan Hafer nailed a 3-pointer to put Mansfield back up by five points with five seconds remaining in the half.
The Mounties went into the locker rooms holding a 29-24 advantage over the Warriors.
The second half matched the intensity of the first, but Mansfield never surrendered their lead to East Stroudsburg. The Warriors closed within two points with 15:17 remaining in the game, but the Mounties forced three straight missed shots by ESU while holding a two possession lead for most of the half.
Leading 45-42 with 6:18 left in the contest, Mansfield kicked-off a 12-3 run on a Matter lay-up to put the game out of reach.
East Stroudsburg was unable to overcome the deficit as the Mounties glided to a 70-58 divisional win.
Moore continued to rewrite the Mansfield record books Wednesday night as her 19 points moved her past Donna Kukura (1980-83) for third in career scoring and her nine boards surpassed Kathy Murphy (1992-95) for sixth in career rebounding. Moore becomes only the third player in Mountaineer history to record at least 1,200 points and 700 rebounds in her career (
Alison Tagliaferri & Jessica Uhrich).
Moore also added five assists, two blocks and a steal in the winning effort.
Freshman
Alyssa DeRichie came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points while grabbing six rebounds. Nine of DeRichie's points came from the free throw line where she shot 90% on the night.
Junior forward
Julia Stevenson chipped in 13 points and six rebounds while Matter added 10 points, five boards and four steals.
Mansfield went 30 of 37 from the free throw line, including 27 of 34 in the second half, to shoot 81.1%. The last time the Mounties made 30 or more free thows in a game was against Columbia Union College on Nov. 19, 2005.
East Stroudsburg's Jessica Martin scored a game-high 22 points and pulled in eight rebounds.
