Mounties Closer to Playoff Berth After Split with Shippensburg

MANSFIELD – Andy Young threw a complete game and Glen Jenkins drove in four runs to lead Mansfield to a 14-3 win over Shippensburg in the opening game of a PSAC East Senior Day doubleheader at Shaute Field Saturday afternoon.

Mansfield's seventh inning rally fell feet short in the nightcap as Shippensburg salvaged a split with a 7-5 win in the nightcap.

The doubleheader also marked Senior Day with the Mountaineers Marc Baker, Dan Chevalier, Mike Hartz, Glen Jenkins, Kevin Miller and Eric Rosenberger honored in pregame ceremonies.
The split helped Mansfield move closer to a PSAC playoff berth after East Stroudsburg dropped a pair of games to Millersville.

In the opener, Mansfield scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning after Shippensburg had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning. Senior Glen Jenkins hit a bases-loaded double to drive in Mansfield's first two runs with Mike Hartz adding an RBI single.

The Mountaineers got six more runs in the bottom of the third with Kevin Miller delivering a two-run single and Hartz singling in another run to give Mansfield a 10-1 lead.

Mansfield added a solo run in the fourth inning and Hartz singled in another run in the fifth to extend the lead to 12-2. The Mountaineers got two more runs in the sixth, with one of them scoring on Jenkins' second double of the game.

While Mansfield scored plenty of runs, junior Andy Young was the star of the game. Young, who got a win at Shippensburg working two innings of relief, threw a complete game scattering five hits and allowing just one earned run.

Hartz went 3-3 while Jenkins was 2-4 with two doubles and four RBI to lead the Mansfield offense.
In the nightcap, Mansfield jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on run scoring singles by Jon Moser and Ernie Ruch.

Mansfield starter Craig Cyerman was perfect through the first two innings but Shippensburg scored six runs in the third, four of them being unearned, to take a 6-2 lead.

Mansfield got three runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by Seth Tressler and run scoring single by Kevin Miller.

Shippensburg got an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Steve Sulcoski singled in a run to give Shippensburg a 7-5 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

Jenkins opened the bottom half of the inning with an infield single and Tressler singled one out later to give Mansfield runners at first and second with one out. Woodworth ground out for the second out but moved the runners to second and third.

taking a called strike and ball, Miller drilled the third pitch deep into centerfield where Shippensburg's AJ Czap tracked the ball down on the warning track to end the game.

Tressler and Miller each went 2-4 with an RBI to lead the Mansfield offense with Joel Worthington putting in a strong relief performance allowing three hits and striking out three over the final 4.2 innings.

Scott got the win for Shippensburg to improve to 4-2 with Sulcoski going 2-4 with two RBI.

The split improved Mansfield's bid for a PSAC berth. Millersville won the PSAC East with a 19-5 division mark with Shippensburg finishing its conference slate with a 12-12 mark. Kutztown also ended its regular season with an 11-13 PSAC mark as did Bloomsburg.

Mansfield, which has makeup doubleheaders remaining with East Stroudsburg and West Chester, is 9-11 while East Stroudsburg and West Chester are 9-13.

The PSAC takes the top four teams from each division, only Millersville and Shippensburg have earned berths in the conference championship tournament.

Mansfield will take the week off for finals before hosting East Stroudsburg on Sunday, May 8 and West Chester on May 9.
