Mansfield gets key split at Kutztown – Hartz hits grand slam in opener

KUTZTOWN –
Joel Worthington threw a complete-game three-hitter and
Mike Hartz hit a grand slam to lead Mansfield to a 8-3 win in the opening game of a PSAC East doubleheader at Kutztown Monday afternoon.
Mansfield dropped the nightcap 6-3.
In the opener, Mansfield broke up a scoreless game with five runs in the third inning on a one out grand slam home run of the left field fence by senior
Mike Hartz.
Kutztown cut the lead to 5-1 with a run in the bottom of the inning but Mansfield got the run back in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by
Seth Tressler down the left field line taking a 6-1 lead.
Kutztown scored twice in the fifth to pull to 6-3, but
Glen Jenkins drilled a two-run home run over the left field fence with one out in the top of the to give the Mountaineers an 8-3 lead.
Worthington, who got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh, scattered three hits while striking out four. He issued four walks, two of them coming in the seventh, and was charged with two earned runs in improving to 4-0 on the season.
Jenkins went 2-4 with a home run and two RBI's.
Jon Moser had a double and
Seth Tressler and
Dylan Woodworth each drove in a run.
J.R. Seader went 5.1 innings to take the loss for Kutztown.
In the nightcap, Kutztown jumped out to a 3-0 lead, scoring two runs in the second inning on a two-out two-run single by Cody Montz and a two-out RBI single by Kyle Stoudt in the third.
Mansfield closed the gap to 3-2 with two runs in the top of the fourth when hartz led off with a single and
moved to second on a bunt single by
Kevin Miller. Both runners moved up on a sac but by
Brian Milliman before Hartz scored on a grounder by
Jon Moser. Miller later scored on an error.
But Kutztown would get three runs in the bottom of the fifth, two of them coming on a single by Brad Stout to increase the lead to 6-2.
Mansfield attempted to rally, scoring a run in the six and twice had runners in scoring position in the seventh but couldn't push across the tying runs.
Tressler had two of Mansfield's five hits in the game including a double.
Jon Moser and
Dan Chevalier each drove in a run.
Andy Young started and took the loss going 4.1 innings and striking out three.
Mike Martin came in relief giving up one hit and striking out one over the final 1.2 innings.
Trent Martz picked up the win for Kutztown to improve to 5-2.
Mansfield, which split the season series with Kutztown 2-2, is now 16-7 overall and 5-3 in PSAC East play.
The Mountaineers are scheduled to host Millersville in a makeup doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Shaute Field.
