CALIFORNIA – Senior guard
Mallory Moore led all scorers with 19 points, but it wouldn't be enough as Mansfield (1-3, 0-3 PSAC) dropped a 79-52 PSAC crossover decision to California (3-2, 2-1 PSAC).
Moore, who surpassed Lynell Moseley (2000-03) for eighth all-time in Mountaineer women's basketball scoring in their last outing against Houghton, needed just two points to move past Glenda Oswald (1989-92) for seventh all-time. At the 17:19 mark in the first half, Moore hit the first of two free throws to tie Oswald. With a lay-up at 13:37, Moore moved into seventh place in career scoring.
With her 19 points this afternoon, Moore sits at 1,136 career points and is just 30 away from moving past Kathy Murphy (1992-95) for sixth in scoring history.
Junior forward
Julia Stevenson built her double-digit scoring streak to four games with her 12 points on the day. Stevenson went five-of-nine from the floor and had a team high seven rebounds.
California, who held a 39-21 advantage over the Mounties at half, built their lead to 22 points with 17:37 remaining in the second. However, a pesky Mansfield wouldn't go away as senior
Monique Webley's three-point basket at the 15:40 mark capped a 7-1 run by the Mountaineers to cut the deficit to 15.
Mansfield couldn't spoil the Vulcan's opening contest in the new Convocation Center as California came away with a 79-52 victory.
Senior Danielle Luckett led the way for the Vulcans, scoring 15 points and dishing six assists.
Meredith Hafer led the Mountie offense, distributing five assists while also recording two blocks on defense.
The Mountaineers complete the second half of their road trip when they travel to IUP for a PSAC crossover game. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
