MANSFIELD –
Mallory Moore and
Jena Matter each scored a game-high 16 points while
Marrysa Moyer recorded a double-double as the Mansfield University women's basketball team (2-5, 1-5 PSAC) upended visiting Slippery Rock University (1-7, 0-6 PSAC) 88-66.
“It was a team win, we had everyone contribute” explained head coach Ruth Hermansen after the game. “I was very happy for the team.”
Julia Stevenson took an inlet pass from Matter and layed it into the basket to give Mansfield back the lead with 15:46 remaining in the first half. That would be the last time Slippery Rock would hold a lead in the contest as Mansfield used a complete team effort to pick-up the win.
The Mountaineers had two players in double-digits at half as Moore and Moyer recorded 12 and 10 points respectively. Seven other Mounties contributed in the half to total 47 points to Slippery Rock's 35. Mansfield's 47 points at half matched the Mountaineer's total points from last night's 66-47 loss to Mercyhurst College.
Mansfield continued to roll in the second half, taking a 14-point halftime lead and building it into an insurmountable 24-point advantage with 11:04 remaining in the game. The Mounties utilized their deep bench throughout the second half, but their lead never fell below 19 points.
Slippery Rock couldn't find an answer as Mansfield glided to an 88-66 victory over the PSAC West foes.
Moore and Matter led all scorers with 16 points each. The duo was also dominating on the boards with Matter pulling down eight rebounds while Moore reined in seven.
Moore made another leap in the Mansfield record books Saturday afternoon. With her 16 points, the senior moved past Allyson Buss (1999-03) and into fifth in career scoring at 1,184 points. Also, with four take-aways on the day, Moore ties Leslie Nicotera (1982-85) for sixth in career steals.
Consistently able to find scoring opportunities in the paint, Stevenson racked-up 15 points against The Rock going seven-of-twelve from the floor. The junior also added five rebounds and two blocks.
Freshman
Marrysa Moyer picked up her second double-double on the season scoring 14 points and bringing in 11 rebounds while junior
Kayla Espigh came off the bench to score 12 points. Espigh was a long-ball threat in the game, knocking down four 3-pointers.
Today's point total marks the highest since Mansfield defeated Salem International 95-49 last season.
Slippery Rock's Danielle Smith scored 14 points and had four rebounds to lead The Rock.
Mansfield will be back in action on Dec. 19 when the Mounties host Central Penn College at Decker Gymnasium. Game time is set for 5:30.
