VESTAL, NY – The Mansfield University women's basketball team struggled to get consistant offensive production in an 81-28 road loss to Division I Binghamton University Tuesday night. The Bearcats' Vaneeshia Paulk led all scorers with 10 points going four of six from the field and connecting on two of two free throws.
The Mountaineer's full-court defensive pressure kept Binghamton in-check for the opening minutes of the contest, as Mansfield held the Bearcats' lead to just single digits over the first eight minutes. However, Binghamton used a 25-8 run over the next 12 minutes to go into halftime leading the Mounties 42-14.
Mansfield had trouble shooting in the spacious Binghamton arena, going just 17% from the field and connecting on one of 12 three-pointers attempted in the first half. Meanwhile, the Bearcats shot 51% from the field at their home court.
Morgan Hafer and
Julia Stevenson led the Mounties in scoring at half with five points apiece. Much of the Bearcats defense was focused on 2
nd team All-PSAC guard
Mallory Moore who was held to just two points.
Binghamton continued to grow their lead in the second half, but Mansfield gained solid experience as 7 Mountaineers came off the bench to see action. The Bearcats were too much for Mansfield as they walked away with an 81-28 victory.
Stevenson led Mansfield in scoring and rebounding with nine and eight respectively. Moore ended the contest with seven points, five rebounds, and three steals while
Morgan Hafer chipped in five points for the Mountaineers.
The highly touted freshman duo of
Marrysa Moyer and
Alyssa DeRichie proved they could compete at the college level. Moyer reined-in four offensive rebounds and had an assist while DeRichie had a steal, an assist, and two defensive rebounds in the game.
Mansfield opens up their season in a home contest against defending PSAC Champions Edinboro University on Saturday, November 19
th.
