Mansfield women hang tough with California

MANSFIELD – Kayla Smith scored a game-high 26 points to lead California to a 62-50 win over Mansfield in a PSAC crossover game Monday evening in Decker Gymnasium.
The game was tied a 13-13 when Mansfield freshman
Kaitlyn Mourer hit a layup 11 minutes into the contest but California would go on a 27-11 run to take a 40-24 advantage into halftime.
California extended its lead to 50-33 seven minutes into the second half but Mansfield hung tough and cut the lead to 50-41 on a pair of free throw by
Shakara Gooding at the midway point of the second half.
Mansfield still trailed by nine points at 55-46 with under five minutes to play but could pull no closer.
Mansfield shot just 29% from the floor including 23% in the second half and were outrebounded 46-34.
Mallory Moore just missed a double-double for Mansfield scoring a team-high 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
Nicole Pender added 11 points with five assists and five steals.
In addition to her 26 points, Smioth also pulled down 18 rebounds and was the only player to score in double-figures for California (6-3).
Mansfield falls to 5-4 and will host Indiana of PA on Tuesday.
