MANSFIELD – Jessie Wolski's last shot of the game with no time remaining had the potential of tying the game but the sound of the ball hitting the left post extinguished hopes of taking the game into overtime.
The Mounties came out strong as they put up the first two goals in the game when
Kristyn Grunza busted a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal from just inside the circle four minutes into play and then Grunza was credited with an assist five minutes later as she rocked a pass from outside the arc to waiting teammate,
Taryn Schawillie as she put it past the goalie's legs.
East Stroudsburg responded with three goals with Jessica Frantz scoring two out of her complete hat-trick and Amanda McGuire scoring one. Mansfield finished out the half with another goal from Schawillie off of an assist from
Ashley Bronston.
East Stroudsburg's Joanna Reckley scored six minutes into the second half which was quickly responded by Schawillie making a pass to
Alycia Pici which was tipped into the bottom right corner of the goal to bring the score up to 4-4.
East Stroudsburg took the lead and held onto it as Frantz completed her hat-trick 53 minutes into the game off an assist by McGuire.
Maureen Ordnung got the win in goal today with two saves bringing her record to 7-0.
stepped in to finish the game off with three saves and no goals allowed. The Mansfield defense also put up two defensive saves against the visiting Warriors.
Mansfield had nine shots with six of them on goal while 21 out of East Stroudsburg's 23 shots were on goal. Mansfield's record now falls to 2-5 and ESU stays undefeated with a 7-0 record.
In pregame ceremonies, the field hockey team gave recongnition to their bus driver for the past couple of years, Tom Smith. During halftime celebrations, the 2001 field hockey team that won the ECAC Division II Championship was brought out onto the field for a reunion.
Mansfield will be back in contest Saturday, October 2 when they host the visiting Red Raiders of Shippensburg University. Game time is set for 12 pm.
