Mansfield Field Hockey falls to #1 Shippensburg

MANSFIELD – The Mansfield University field hockey team lost in a 5-1 decision to No. 1-ranked Shippensburg in a PSAC West matchup Thursday afternoon a at Karl Van Norman Field.

The game was a continuation of an October 2nd match that saw only 19 seconds of action before severe thunderstorms forced officials to postpone the match.

The game started with 34:41 on the clock and the ball placed at the same location as it was on October 2nd before the game was called off.

Mansfield's offense forced a number of corners early in the first half but couldn't capitalized on any of them.

Shippensburg's Amanda Strous knocked in her 9th goal of the season via a Katie Pufnock assist with 24 minutes left to play in the half for the first goal of the afternoon. The Lady Raiders struck again when Katie Pufnock played a ball past the keeper 5-yards out just nine minutes after the first goal.

Shippensburg recorded their third goal of the game with just under 10 minutes in the game off a Bre White unassisted goal.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Mansfield had a strong scoring opportunity when Kylie Davis fired a shot on goal that was deflected by a Shippensburg defender.

Minutes later, Shippensburg's Katie Purfnock snuck a ball into the goal off an Ashley Taylor pass. The Lady Raiders increased their lead to five when Bre White found the back of the goal off of rebounded shot saved by Mansfield goalie Jamie Twist.

The Mountaineers prevented Shippensburg from recording their 5th straight divisional shutout when sophomore Kristy Tutorow scored her 11th goal of the season in the game's 61st minute.. Tutorow put the ball past the Shippensburg goalie off a Taryn Schawillie pass from the top of the circle.

Mansfield's Jillian Richards prevented a Shippensburg goal with a well played defensive save with just over a minute remaining in the game.

With the win, Shippensburg remains undefeated and improves to 15-0 overall and 6-0 in the PSAC West. Mansfield falls to 5-10 overall and 3-2 in the PSAC. Mansfield still holds a one game lead over Mercyhurst and a 1 ½ game lead over IUP for 2nd place in the division. The top two team from each division advance to the PSAC playoffs.

Mansfield travels to Shippensburg this Saturday, October 30th for their second divisional matchup of the season. The game is set to begin at 12:00pm. This game is one of three remaining divisional games for the Mounties.
