Diane Monkiewicz becomes first field hockey coach in school history to hit 100 wins

LOCK HAVEN, PA - Head field hockey coach,
Diane Monkiewicz has reached a monumental point in her 13 seasons at Mansfield by getting her 100th career victory as the Mountaineers defeated Mercyhurst College 4-2 in PSAC West action Friday evening in Lock Haven due to poor field conditions.
Nearly six minutes into the beginning of the first half, sophomore,
Kristyn Grunza scored off a deflected attempt to clear the ball by a Mercyhurst defender. Six minutes later, Mansfield increased its lead when freshman,
Emily Heinaman rocketed a pass from across the left side of the field to waiting
Kristy Tutorow as she tipped it into the top of the net to extend the lead to 2-0.
Mansfield was awarded a penalty stroke in the 18th minute of play with junior,
Jillian Richards lifting the ball into the top right corner, out of reach of Mercyhurst's Ashley Wiskup to give the Mounties a 3-0 lead.
Mercyhurst responded with a goal from Rachel Sluberski when she intercepted a Mansfield defender's pass and shot it from eight yards out in the 28th minute of play.
No more points were added on the scoreboard until late in the second half when Mansfield scored their final goal from freshman,
Taryn Schawillie just four yards out off a pass from Richards. Grunza's and Schawillie's goals are both their 10th each this season so far.
Mercyhurst had one more final attempt to bring the final score closer with a goal off a penalty corner and Serena Slattery scoring from 12 yards out.
Mansfield stays undefeated in the PSAC West with a 3-0 record (5-6 overall) and Mercyhurst falls to a 2-9 overall record and 1-4 in the PSAC West.
Mercyhurst outshot Mansfield in the first half 9-6 but only had two shots in the second half as the ball spent most of the time in front of the Mercyhurst goal with Mansfield ripping off 20 more shots in the second half.
Wiskup had 10 saves in goal for the Lakers while Mansfield's
Jamie Twist took the win with five saves making her season record now 3-4 with 92 saves.
The Mountaineers travel to Seton Hill University on Monday for a 4 pm game.
