MANSFIELD-
Dan Yoder (Montoursville/Williamsport), John Cronin (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) and Marty Rakaczewski (Wilkes-Barre/Hanover Area) combined in Mansfield University's 3-0 shutout over St. Anselm College in the nightcap of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Shaute Field.
Yoder pitched five innings of shutout baseball while striking out four batters in a pitching duel with St. Anselm's Ryan Williams. It was a scoreless game until the sixth inning when junior
Travis Wurster (Montoursville/Montoursville) led the inning off with a double to left field.
Wurster advanced to third on a
Josh Rearick (Elton/Forest Hills) single and would later score on a fielder's choice when
Brandon Brokaw (Altoona/Altoona) grounded out to second base. Brokaw then scored on a single by DJ Hoshauer (Hamburg/Hamburg) with Matt Mills driving in the third run on a sacrifice fly.
Cronin threw the sixth inning allowing just one hit to pick up the win and improve to 3-1 on the year. Rakaczewski threw the seventh inning to record his fifth save of the season and perserve the 3-0 shutout.
In the opening game Mansfield fell short 2-1 as St. Anselm opened the scoring in the third inning when Keith Beauregard homered off
Jeff Papi (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock). The Mountaineers tied the game in the bottom half of the fourth inning when
Eric Baker (Apalachin, NY/Owego) scored on a passed ball.
However, the Hawks responded in the top half of the fifth inning when Beauregard drove in his second run of the game scoring Brian McCabe on a fielder's choice. St. Anselm held on to the victory keeping the
Mountaineers scoreless in the final two innings. It was Papi's first loss of the season in five decisions.
Mansfield is now 12-8 on the season and will play host to the Warriors of East Stroudsburg 1 p.m. Friday in the PSAC East season opener.
