Mounties Split with Wheeling, Take Weekend Series

WHEELING, W. Va.- The Mansfield Mountaineers Baseball team split a pair of games to claim weekend series against Wheeling University, on Saturday, Feb. 21.
 
Mansfield (3-4) fell 6-5 in ten innings in game one and took game two by a score of 6-2. 
 
GAME 1
 
The Mounties would be pulled into their third extra inning game of the year, falling 6-5.
 
Slade Mictigue would go 3-5 with a pair of RBI to lead the Mountie offence. Austin Beauchamp got the start and tossed 4.1 innings and seven strikeouts.
 
Mansfield got off to a quick start plating three runs in the first. Mictigue and Nick Ledger would drive in those runs to lead 3-0 after on inning. They would add two more in the fifth on a triple by Micheal Palmer to go up 5-1. 
 
Mansfield bats would be shut down the rest of the way and the Cardinals would add five runs and get the walk off in extras.
 
GAME 2
 
Mansfield would use a pair of long balls as the catalyst to close out the series with a 6-2 victory. 
 
 Ryan Sekulski and Evan Laredo each hit their first homeruns of the season. Tyler Swineford got the start tossing 3.2 innings and five strikeouts while only giving up one earned run. Brad Hood would get the win after throwing 2.1 innings and two strike outs. 
 
Mansfield once again struck first with a solo homerun from Laredo in the second inning.
 
Wheeling would tie the game in the fourth at 1-1, but the Mounties would stamp the lead after Tanner Hoffman would bring in a run on a double to left field. Hoffman would be brought home on a two run home run by Sekulski to go up 4-1, after five innings. 
 
Mansfield would add insurance runs in the seventh inning as Michael Palmer would drive in two more runs to go up 6-1. The Cardinals added another run but the Mounties would claim victory 6-2. 
 
UP NEXT:
The Mounties are set to hit the road again to compete against Holy Family University. The games are scheduled for Saturday, February 28, at 1:00 and 3:30 pm, with the final games on Sunday, March 1, at 1:00 pm and 3:30.
