MANSFIELD Pa. – The Mansfield Mountaineers Women's Basketball team battled late but was unable to overcome the visiting East Stroudsburg Warriors and fell 59-53, on Thursday, Jan. 15.
Katie Sheeler and
Delilah Nazih each netted 12 points to lead the Mountaineers (2-14, 0-9 PSAC).
KJ Gordon had 11 points, and Sheeler and Ty Woody tied for the team lead nine rebounds.
The Mounties got off to a slow start against the Warriors (10-6, 5-4 PSAC) shooting 20% from the floor. Nazih accounted for five of Mansfield's first quarter points but trailed 22-12 at the end of one.
In the Second, Mansfield flipped the script holding East Stroudsburg to eight points in the quarter. Mansfield fount the outside shot thanks to Sheeler and
Maya Dickerson. The Mountaineers cut the deficit to three, 30-27 heading into half.
The teams traded baskets in the third quarter, before a 7-0 run by the Warriors stretched the lead in the middle of the quarter. Gordon hit a big three followed by a driving layup as the final points of the quarter. Both teams were held scoreless in the final minute. Mansfield trailed 43-36.
The Mounties trailed 53-39 with five minutes left in the contest. Over the final five, Mansfield would get five steals and go on a 15-8 run. Woody would score five straight and Sheeler and Gordan would hit clutch free throws. East Stroudsburg would never relinquish the lead and get the 59-53 victory.
Brie Droege had a game high 17 to lead the Warriors.
