MANSFIELD. Pa. – The Mansfield Mountaineers women's field hockey team overpowered the Saint Micheal Purple Knights, 9-0, Saturday (Sept. 6)
Mansfield's nine goals is the most scored in a season opener in program history and the most goals scored in a game since 2023. Sophia Vadnais and Jenna Duke lead the Mounties (1-0) with both earning two goals on the day, with Duke adding an assist.
The exciting game started with Vadnais scoring in the 12th minute, redirecting a slick pass from Ella du Plessis.Â
Four minutes later, Duke added a goal with a low shot from Kiley Stoltzfus, and then scored again in another three minutes to make it 3–0.
Mansfield continued to dominate, when Kathleen Marchiani added a goal early in the second half to lead 4-0, followed by du Plessis scoring two minutes later to make it 5–0.Â
Freshman Amanda Ray converted a penalty corner at the in the third quarter for her first career goal, assisted by Melanie Esh.
Fellow teammate Katie Thomas decided to score one of her own from du Plessis just a few minutes later.
Vadnais scored again in the final quarter, assisted by Duke, to extend the lead to eight goals.
Freshman Kyleigh Hinson put a nail in the coffin by scoring the final goal, of the night unassisted which was also her first goal in her career.Â
For Saint Michael's College (0-1) Joelle Cameron had eight saves, and the Purple Knights collected four defensive saves in the contest. Â
