Mansfield Opens Season With Late Minute Victory Against Penn

The Mansfield sprint football team started their 2025 schedule on Saturday night.

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Mansfield Mountaineers sprint football team (1-0) capped off Homecoming festivities with the team's 2025 opener on Saturday (Sept. 27) night against Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) member Penn, with a late score for the Mounties to squeeze out the 15-9 victory.

Marcus Quaker capitalized on a late fourth quarter drive with 7:47 remaining and the two-point conversion rounded out the 15-9 score.

Weston Bellows led the Mounties on the ground with 17 carries for 65 yards and a trick play pass for 33 yards. Quaker was 7-17 for 53 yards in the air and added another 48 on the ground.

Defensively Jackson Taylor led the Mounties with eight tackles with five solo. Matt Machmer and Antonio Green Jr. each had interceptions for Mansfield.

A 31-yard pick six started the highlights for Mansfield as Machmer began his collegiate career with the red and black's first touchdown of the 2025 campaign.

Penn remained composed and got an interception that led to a drive resulting in a five yard touchdown pass from Jackson Neild to Jason Sheairs. A missed PAT kept Mansfield ahead at the 4:06 left in the half 7-6.

The Mounties drove towards the end of the half but were stopped on fourth down in the waning seconds of the first half for the score to remain 7-6.

A 29-yard field goal gave the Quakers their first lead of the game in the third quarter taking the led by a score of 9-7.

A stifled Mountaineer offense found a spark in the final quarter using a trick play, 33 yard pass from Bellows to Eli Swan.  Quaker would scamper in for an eight yard score with 7:47 remaining. Bellows threw to Quaker on another trick play to get the two point conversion to go up 15-9.

The Mountaineer defense was able to get a fourth down stop on a deep ball, with Caleb Smith knocking the ball away.

For the Quakers, Nield was 15 of 29 for 175 yards, with Sheairs accounting for 142 yards on eight catches.
