Mansfield Holds Caldwell Scoreless in 31-0 Victory

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Mansfield Mountaineers sprint football team pitched a shutout in a 31-0 home victory against Caldwell, on Saturday, Oct. 4.

This marks the first Mansfield (2-0) shutout since Oct. 15 of 2022. The Mountaineer defense was relentless coming away with three sacks, two interceptions, and had five fourth down stops. Jackson Taylor led with 10 tackles and a sack. Ian Mapp and Jack Burbage had 1.5 sacks a piece. Matt Machmer and Antonio Green Jr. each collected their second interception in as many weeks.

Marcus Quaker led the offense accounting for 190 yards of total offense and four total touchdowns. Quaker had 113 yards on the ground with three scores and 77 yards through the air with a touchdown and an interception.

The Cougars (1-2) got the ball first and drove down the field, until Machmer plucked a pass out of the air at the three-yard line, for his second interception of the year.

Mansfield responded with an eight play 37-yard drive that was all running plays. Quaker punched it in from five yards out for the Mounties to go up 7-0.

The Mounties defensively were able to get a fourth down stop on the ensuing drive. That lead to an 11 play 65 yard drive that took 7:18 minutes, which was also capped off by a Quaker six yard run, Mounties led 14-0.

Caldwell was driving before halftime, putting together a drive that started at their own eight yard line. The Mansfield defense put up a goal line stand at the three yard line. Green Jr.  deflected the ball on fourth down. Mansfield would take the 14-0 lead into the half.

Mansfield would start the third quarter slow as Quaker threw an interception on the first drive. The Mansfield defense bailed out their quarterback getting another fourth down stop.

Quaker would stamp his response the ensuing drive with a 43 yard rushing touchdown, the Mounties would go up by a score of 21-0.

The following Mansfield drive, the Mountaineers  would use some trickeration calling a punt formation pass on fourth down and long. Quaker found Caleb Smith in the endzone to go up 28-0.

The fourth turnover on downs forced by the defense would set up the final scoring drive for Mansfield. Nolan Zona would connect on a 35 yard field goal to give the Mounties a 31-0 lead.

The defense would make one more fourth down stop to finish of the shutout.
