Mountaineers Bested in Nationally Ranked Doubleheader at No. 9 ESU

The Mansfield softball team began the second half of the conference schedule on Thursday afternoon.

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Mansfield Mountaineers softball team faced their third nationally ranked Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent in No. 9 East Stroudsburg (29-5, 13-1 PSAC East) on Thursday (Apr. 3) afternoon, as the Warriors propelled to an eight-game win streak after their 8-0 game one victory and a game two 5-1 win.

GAME 1: #9 East Stroudsburg 8 - Mansfield 0 (5 innings)

ESU leaped out to a 4-0 start after the first inning, using three hits and two errors to build the advantage.

To round out the early finish to game one, the Warriors stamped four more runs off four hits and three errors in the bottom of the fourth to cap off the 8-0 start to the afternoon.

Natalie Blackstone went a perfect 2 for 2 at the plate for Mansfield (6-18, 4-12 PSAC East), while Melissa Demo and Madison Bailey collected a hit each.

GAME 2: #9 East Stroudsburg 5 - Mansfield 1

East Stroudsburg collected the first run with a simple RBI single in the bottom of the first.

Caydence Macik doubled to start the second, and Kylie Bornman singled to give the Mounties a chance to score, but a play at the plate kept the Warriors on top, 1-0.

Emma Maurer turned it on the Warriors striking out two straight to end the third with the bases jammed.

Once again, Bornman singled, but this hit scored in Sarah Shupp to tie up the contest at 1-1 in the top of the fourth.

To end the fifth inning, ESU continued their small ball skill with another RBI single to retake the slim 2-1 edge.

Three insurance runs calmed the host, stopping any comeback opportunity for the Mountaineers in the bottom of the sixth to claim the 5-1 victory.
