Mansfield Walks-Off Millersville Twice

MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Mansfield Mountaineers softball team (8-22, 6-16 PSAC East) competed against the Millersville Marauders (22-20, 6-16 PSAC East) on Tuesday (Apr. 14) at Helen Lutes Field, with this being the second doubleheader with the Marauders ending in a Mounties 7-6 game one victory and a 9-8 game two win.

GAME 1: Mansfield 7 - Millersville 6

Millersville had a strong first inning as they got on the board early with a 1-0 lead from an RBI. After the Marauders scored a run, Mansfield put up multiple defensive stops on the Marauders to keep them scoreless in the second inning.

This gives the Mountaineers momentum as a wild pitch from Millersville led to Melissa Demo earning a run from a wild pitch to tie the contest, 1-1 in the bottom of the third.

After all bases were loaded for the Ville, they capitalized by scoring five runs and regained the lead making it 6-1.

With a single into left field from Sarah Shupp, Mansfield had the bases loaded and took advantage of it by putting up 2 runs and three hits courtesy of Madison Bailey being walked for Shupp to score and an RBI from Demo that had Aubrey Reinert scoring the run to shorten the Marauders lead to 6-3.

Things started to turn around for the Mounties in the sixth inning as Emma Wonsick drove a triple to left center that gave her an RBI with Madison Bailey scoring the run.

Blackstone would add to Mansfield's hot hitting with a single to right field which gave her an RBI with Paige Reichard scoring, making it a 6-5 game with Millersville still leading.

Mansfield tied the game with a Caydence Macik solo shot, her fourth home run of the season. Two batters later, Kylie Bornman sealed the game with a walk-off home run to defeat Millersville, 7-6.

GAME 2: Mansfield 9 - Millersville 8

In the first inning, the Marauders got out to an early lead by recording two runs in the first inning with a score of 2-0.

Both teams were in a defensive stalemate as Macik had an impressive catch in the left field to prevent more runs for Millersville.
Mansfield struggled finding momentum until Blackstone earned a two RBI single with Demo and Rachel Sherman scoring.

The Mounties continued to add on as Shupp tripled down the right field line for an RBI with Blackstone scoring and Macik drove Shupp on a sacrifice fly as the Mountaineers took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Millersville quickly turned things around in the sixth and seventh innings as they responded with three runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to take control of the game with a score of 8-4.

It was a strong bottom of the seventh inning for the Mountaineers as they were able to load the bases. Shupp singled into right field for an RBI with Olivia Ackerson scoring the run.  Then, Macik recorded a two RBI double with both Blackstone and Demo scoring two more runs to bring Mansfield back into the game.

Freshman Alex Reisinger helped the Mounties complete another comeback by hitting a double to center field that scored Macik and Shupp scoring the final two runs that led to a Mansfield 9-8 victory over the Marauders.
