MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Mountaineers (11-21, 5-11 PSAC East) concluded their four-game weekend series with the No. 9 Millersville Marauders (27-6, 13-3 PSAC East) on Sunday, Apr. 13.
Â
Both games were played as Mansfield home games due to the weather in Mansfield this weekend.
Â
Game One: No. 9 Millersville 30, Mansfield 5
Â
The Marauders took an early 5-0 lead through 1 ½ innings of play. Mansfield responded in the bottom of the second with two runs on a
Jeffrey Coakley two-run shot to pull back to within three.
Â
Millersville broke the game open, scoring 12 runs across the third and fourth innings.
Â
Coakley knocked in his third RBI of the game with a single in the bottom of the fourth.
Â
Cole Serfass (3-3 in the game) plated two with a single in the bottom of the fifth.
Â
Millersville tacked on 12 more from that point forward and powered past the Mountaineers in game one.
Â
Game Two: No. 9 Millersville 11, Mansfield 4
Â
Millersville started game two like game one, striking for two in the first.
Â
Shane Stossel pulled the Mounties back to within one with his solo shot in the bottom half.
Â
The Marauders added three more in the second and third before
Jacob Houtz's two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth.
Â
Trailing 6-3 going into the bottom of the sixth, Mansfield looked to cut into the Millersville lead against the new righty reliever.
Â
After a Houtz single and a
Hunter Smith walk,
Ryan Verbonitz singled home Houtz to cut the deficit to two and knock out the Marauder reliever. The Mountaineer rally stopped there as they couldn't push across anymore.
Â
Millersville scored five runs in the top of the seventh to take a comfortable 11-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh and retired the Mounties quietly to finish the Sunday sweep.
