Smith’s Five-RBI Game Earns Split with No. 9 Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Mansfield Mountaineers (11-19, 5-9 PSAC East) began their four-game weekend series with the No. 9-ranked Millersville Marauders (25-6, 11-3 PSAC East) on Saturday (Apr. 12) afternoon.

Game One: Mansfield 9, No. 9 Millersville 3

Jacob Houtz got the Mountaineers quickly in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run over the centerfield fence to make it 2-0.

Austin Beauchamp started for the Mounties and got himself out of an early jam in the bottom of the first with a strikeout that left the bases loaded for Millersville.

Hunter Smith joined the homer party in the third with a grand slam to put the Mounties up 6-0. The homer marked his fifth of the season and his 26th RBI.

Beauchamp, who threw 3.1 innings and allowed just one run, was relieved in the bottom of the fourth by Austin Lewis. Lewis went on to get the win, pitching the final 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four.

Mansfield pushed across three more runs in the top of the fifth with RBI walks from Smith and Mike Biuso before Jeffrey Coakley plated Cole Serfass with a sacrifice fly.

Trailing 9-1, Millersville tacked on two in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Mounties cruised to a game one victory over the ranked Marauders.

Game Two: No. 9 Millersville 5, Mansfield 3

Mansfield jumped in front once again in game two with an RBI from Biuso as Houtz scored on his groundout.

The Marauders scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, powered by a two-run shot to give them a 3-1 lead.

Millersville scored two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on three hits, one being an RBI single back up the middle.

Mansfield loaded the bases in the seventh, looking for a rally. Cole Serfass stepped to the plate as the tying run against the new right-hander for the Marauders. Serfass singled back up the middle to score two and cut the deficit to 5-3.

Shane Stossel had a chance to tie the ballgame, but the Millersville reliever got him swinging on a 3-2 count to shut the door and secure the doubleheader split.
