CARY, N.C. - The Mansfield baseball team (3-5) traveled to North Carolina for the DII Challenge on Friday (Mar. 7) to take on Dominican University of New York (2-4) in day one of the challenge.Â

Austin Lewis got the ball for game one, throwing five innings, fanning 7 batters on the day.Â

Lewis struck out all three in the first after allowing a lead-off single to start the game.Â

Hunter Smith scored the first run of the game for the Mounties in the bottom of the second to give Mansfield a 1-0 lead.

Dominican broke open the game in the fifth scoring four runs to take a 4-1 lead over the Mountaineers.

The Chargers added two more to increase their advantage to five before the home half of the sixth.Â
DUNY scored added three more insurance runs with another in the seventh and two in the ninth to make the game 9-1 before the final Mansfield at-bat.

In the ninth, Logan Wells worked a walk and came around to score the last Mountie run as they drop the first game in Cary 9-2.Â

The Mounties are at the DII Challenge again tomorrow (Mar. 8) for a doubleheader against No. 11-ranked Southern New Hampshire University starting at noon.
