SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V. – The Mountaineers (10-13, 4-4 PSAC East) completed their weekend series with the Shepherd University Rams (14-14, 2-6 PSAC East) on Saturday (Mar. 29) afternoon.
Â
Game One: Mansfield 6, Shepherd 5
Â
Mansfield struck early in the top of the first with an RBI single from
Cole Serfass to bring in
Ryan Sekulski.
Â
Shane Stossel started on the bump for the Mounties and cruised through the first two innings as he faced the minimum.
Â
In the third, Mansfield tacked on two more with another RBI knock off the bat of Serfass that plated
Jacob Houtz and Stosel.
Â
Stossel continued to deal on the mound, completing 6.0 innings while allowing no runs on just three hits and striking out seven Rams.
Â
In the top of the seventh, Stossel helped himself by blasting a three-run home run to double the Mountaineers' lead and put them up 6-0 over Shepherd.
Â
The Rams made it a game in the bottom of the seventh, as a single and a walk put runners on first and second with nobody out. Shepherd followed with an RBI double and a hit-by-pitch that loaded the bases. A two-RBI double cut the Mansfield lead to 6-3 and forced coach Chalot to call on
Evan Woznick to get the save.
Â
Woznick retired his first batter via a strikeout before the Rams cut the lead to one with a two-RBI single. With two down and a runner on first, Woznick got the Shepherd seven hitter to fly out to left and secure the game one victory for Mansfield.
Â
Game Two: Mansfield 8, Shepherd 5
Â
Shepherd took an early 3-0 lead, capped off by a two-run homer in the third inning.
Â
Serfass got the Mountaineers on the board in game two with an RBI double in the fourth to make it 3-1.
Â
The Mounties took a 5-3 lead with the help of a four-run fifth inning that was started by Sekulski's RBI double. Stossel and
Ryan Verbonitz each added another with RBI singles.
Jeffrey Coakley finished the inning, bringing in Stossel on a sacrifice fly.
Â
Garrett Emerick started game two for the Mountaineers, going 5.0 innings and allowing three runs on six hits.
Â
Mansfield scored three more in the sixth, first,
Kahale Burns scored on a passed ball and then Houtz brought home two with his single back up the middle.
Â
Luke Raho threw the final two innings and struck out four batters for the Mounties.
Â
Trailing 8-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, Shepherd got two back with a home run but couldn't close the gap any further as the Mountaineers closed out the Saturday sweep.
