Mansfield Drops Doubleheader with Shepherd at Home

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Mansfield baseball (8-13, 2-4 PSAC East) hosted the Shepherd Rams (14-12, 2-4 PSAC East) on Friday (Mar. 28) afternoon for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division doubleheader. 
 
Game One: Mansfield 0, Shepherd 6
 
Austin Lewis made his first start at home on the season in game one throwing six innings, allowing four earned runs, and striking out four Rams hitters.
 
Shepherd got on the board first in the top of the second with a solo home run by the Rams right fielder. 
 
In the fourth, Shepherd put runners on second and third with nobody out. Lewis escaped the inning allowing just one run as the Rams seven hitter provided their second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead. 
 
A fortunate call enabled the Rams to add another run in the fifth to extend their lead to three.
 
The Rams once again put runners on second and third with nobody out in the sixth and this time capitalized. Shepherd scored two runs before Ryan Scott doubled off a runner trying to score from third on a fly ball to center to end the Shepherd half of the sixth. 
 
Alex Bucolo came in to relieve Lewis at the start of the seventh. Shepherd stretched their lead out to 6-0 with a sacrifice fly.
 
Mansfirld managed just five hits in game one as they fell 6-0. 
 
Game Two: Mansfield 4, Shepherd 6
 
Tyler Swineford started game two for the Mounties. He completed six innings of work and allowed five runs on five hits, while striking out five. 
 
Mansfield opened the scoring with two runs in the first thanks to a pair of RBI singles by Luke Raho and Cole Serfass.
 
Shepherd got one back in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly to cut the Mounties lead to 2-1.
 
Ryan Sekulski singled home Kahale Burns in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the Mounties back up two.
 
Shane Stossel added on with another RBI single to extend the Mountaineer lead to three.
 
The Rams took the lead in the top of the sixth with a four run inning, highlighted by a three run shot off the bat of the Shepherd right fielder to put them up 5-4.
 
Shepherd tacked on an insurance run thanks to two errors by the Mountie defense.
 
Mansfield trailed 6-4 entering the bottom of the seventh and couldn't put a rally together as they dropped the second game of the doubleheader.

The Mounties finish their four game series with the Rams tomorrow (Saturday, Mar. 29) in Shepherdstown, W.V. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
