SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Mansfield Mountaineer women's basketball team concluded the 2024-25 season at Shippensburg (8-19, 5-16 PSAC East) on Saturday (Mar. 1) afternoon, with the Mounties sending the seniors off with a win, earning the 63-57 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division victory and their first three-game win streak in program history against the Raiders.Â
With three blocks on the afternoon,
Sarah Hortin finished as the PSAC regular season leader in blocks with 47, the first Mountaineer to accomplish this feat since the 2018-19 season.Â
After splashing eight threes on the afternoon,
Katie Sheeler finished with 73 threes on the season, which is the second most in a single season for the Mounties and tied the program record for three-pointers in a game with eight. Sheeler bested her career high with 27 points and tied her career field goals in a game with eight.
Danae Ellzy finished with 19 points on the afternoon, her tenth of 15+ points, and picked up nine rebounds.
Mounties (10-17, 6-15 PSAC East) began the contest with the 5-4 lead behind Sheeler's first three-pointer to become second all-time, but the Raiders responded with two three-pointers to hold the 10-5 edge, not allowing a Mansfield point for almost four minutes.Â
The Mountaineers topped the cold streak, scoring ten of the final 12 points in the first quarter, including a layup to beat the buzzer by Ellzy to have the 15-12 advantage. The final 6:05 of the quarter saw no Raiders make a field goal, with the Mountaineer defense stopping the last six attempts.Â
Three of the first four field goals went the Mountie way, including two three-pointers from Sheeler to continue their edge at 23-17, their largest lead at that point and held the lead through halftime.Â
Shippensburg reached to within one at a 30-29 scoreline, but five from
Kenedy Stroup and four from Ellzy in the quarter help Mansfield reach a 34-29 base before the halftime buzzer.Â
In a defensive start to the final half of the season, only three baskets sank in the first five minutes with the Mounties holding the slim 36-34 advantage. Hortin picked up two blocks in the first four minutes, which helped claim her conference statistical category.Â
A pullup jumper by Ellzy and another three from Sheeler pushed the red and black out to a seven-point lead at 41-34.Â
A quick turnaround over the next two minutes caught Shippensburg sinking three field goals and earning the momentum with a 41-41 tie.Â
Cydney Stanton put away a layup to retake the lead, but with two seconds left in the third quarter, an and one led to the Raiders holding their first lead since the first quarter as Shippensburg held the 44-43 cut before the final quarter of the season.Â
After a first possession basket, Sheeler responded with another three to make the contest tied at 46 a piece.
Sheeler's splashed two more threes to give the Mounties the 52-50, marking her career high of three-pointers in a game.
After a
Kristen Fulford layup and a Shippensburg three-pointer, Ellzy sank the first three-pointer by another Mountie to post the 57-53 advantage with 4:04 remaining.Â
Seven missed field goals ensued before a Raider free throw nailed the net to bring it to a one possession game with 1:12 left in the contest.Â
Mountaineer defense became the key, which held up and earned six trips to the free throw line in foul time, allowing for Mansfield to end the season by spoiling the Raiders' Senior Day with a 63-57 victory.Â
This concludes the 2024-25 Mountaineer season.
