Mansfield Wraps Weekend Series at Glenville

GLENVILLE, W.V. - The Mansfield Mountaineers (3-4) played their day two doubleheader against the Glenville State Pioneers (5-6) on Saturday (Mar. 1) afternoon.

Game One: Mansfield 13, Glenville State 14

The Mansfield offense jumped out to a fast start in the top of the first, scoring three runs on three hits, highlighted by two RBI singles by Cole Serfass and Ryan Verbonitz.

The Pioneers answered with three in the bottom half to tie the game at three after one inning of play.

Shane Stossel put the Mounties back on top with a single to right in the top of the second that scored Conner Adams

In the third, Glenville retied the game at four with a sacrifice fly to center.

Stossel's two-run shot and Jacob Houtz's solo homer came back-to-back in the fourth to put the Mounties back up by three.

Glenville claimed the lead in the bottom half of the inning after tying the game with a three-run home run and then capitalizing for two runs on a Mansfield error.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Pioneers added another five to take a 14-7 lead over the Mountaineers.

Mansfield loaded the bases with no one out in the sixth but only pushed one across.

In the seventh, the Mountaineers got within two after Stossel hit his second homer of the game to make it 14-12 with just one out in the inning. Houtz followed with a double, bringing the tying run to the plate for the Mounties. Cole Serfass worked a walk, putting the go-ahead run at the dish with still only one out. A Hunter Smith single loaded the bases with the Mountaineers trailing by two.

Ryan Verbonitz grounded a ball back up the middle that looked like it would score two and tie the game after a throwing error by the Pioneers' second baseman. However, the home plate umpire called obstruction on the runner sliding into second and awarded the double play to Glenville as they escaped game one with a 14-13 win over the Mountaineers.

Game Two: Mansfield 2, Glenville State 8

The Mounties struck first once again in game two, getting on the board thanks to a bases loaded walk by Smith.

Much like game one, Glenville responded in the bottom half, scoring three runs, highlighted by a two-run home run to go up 3-1.

Mansfield got one back off a Smith double that brought in Houtz from second.

The Pioneers scored four more in the bottom of the third off a two-RBI double and two-run home run to go up five, 7-2.

GSU added on to their lead in the fourth with an RBI single to right to make it an 8-2 advantage.

Mansfield put runners on in each of the last three innings but couldn't cut into the deficit and lost 8-2 in game two.

UP NEXT:

The Mounties travel to Cary, N.C., to compete in the DII Challenge next weekend (Mar. 7-8). On Friday the 7th, Mansfield will play Dominican University of New York. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
