Mansfield Sweeps Day One at Glenville State

Glenville, W.V. - The Mansfield Mountaineers (3-2) traveled to the Glenville State Pioneers (4-5) for a doubleheader on Friday (Feb. 28) afternoon.

Game One: Mansfield 5, Glenville State 4

Austin Lewis got the win, throwing 5+ innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs, and striking out six on the day. 

In the first inning, Ryan Scott grounded a one-out single back up the middle for the first Mountaineer hit of the game. With two outs, Jacob Houtz walked to put the first runner in scoring position on the day for Mansfield. With runners on first and second, the Mounties grounded out to the first baseman to end the inning. 

Austin Lewis got the ball for game one, and after allowing a hit and a walk to two of the first three batters, he got the next two hitters to strike out and pop out to second to end the inning. 

In the second, Lewis struck out the first two batters he faced before getting the Glenville nine hitter to ground out to short to end the bottom of the second.

The Mountaineers once again had runners on first and second with two outs after back-to-back singles by Houtz and Shane Stossel. On a 2-1 pitch, Cole Serfass gave Mansfield the lead with a three-run shot over the right-centerfield wall. In the bottom half of the third, Glenville loaded the bases but couldn't scratch across a run as the Mounties maintained their 3-0 lead. 

In the fourth, Ryan Scott singled through the left side with a runner on second and first and two outs, The Glenville left fielder was able to throw out the runner at the plate to end the Mountaineer threat. Lewis got into some trouble in the fourth when the Pioneers loaded the bases with nobody out. Glenville pushed two runs across in the inning, but Lewis ended the inning getting the GSU clean-up hitter to strikeout looking. 

Mansfield got both runs back in the top of the fifth to reclaim their three-run advantage, leading 5-2 through 4 ½ innings. Lewis got the Pioneers to go down in order in the bottom of the fifth. 

Luke Raho relieved Austin Lewis in the sixth inning, allowing his inherited runner to score, but then struck out two in the inning and kept the Mounties up by two. 

Raho returned in the seventh, looking to close the game and earn his first save of the season. Raho got the first two batters to strike out before walking the next and hitting another. With two on and two outs, the Pioneers singled to center to score one and cut the Mansfield lead to 5-4. Raho got the next batter to ground out to second and secure the Mounties game one victory. 

Game Two: Mansfield 6, Glenville State 1

Stossel started game two for the Mounties, looking for the Friday sweep. He was credited with a no-decision after throwing 4.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits, and punching out four. 

The first three innings in game two saw a pitcher's duel, with the best scoring opportunity coming in the Mansfield half of the second when they had runners on first and third with one out but couldn't push a run across. 

Glenville State broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot over the left field wall to take a 1-0 lead. 

In the fifth, Mansfield threatened with two outs and runners on first and second. Serfass singled back up the middle, but Houtz was tagged out in a rundown between second and third to end the inning. 

The Mountaineers once again threatened in the sixth, the Mounties had runners on second and third and nobody out. Back-to-back strikeouts for the Pioneers look as if the big hit was gonna allude Mansfield once again. 

With two outs, Ryan Sekulski lined a single into the right-center gap to score Hunter Smith and Mike Biuso to give the Mountaineers a 2-1 lead. 

The Mounties added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh thanks to an RBI double by Biuso, an RBI single by Ryan Verbonitz, an error by the Glenville pitcher allowing Biuso to score, and finally another RBI knock by Sekulski. 

Mason Pfeil picked up his first win of the season, allowing just one hit over the final three innings for Mansfield.

The Mountaineers play another doubleheader against Genville State tomorrow, Saturday (Mar. 1). First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
