Mansfield Beats Cornell to Win Josh Palmer Pigskin Classic

MANSFIELD, Pa.- The Mansfield Mountaineers sprint football team defeated Cornell 27-13 to win the Josh Palmer Pigskin Classic Game, on Saturday Oct. 25.

Weston Bellows had 24 carries for 170 yards and two scores to lead the Mounties (4-1, 2-0 CSFL North) offensively. Marcus Quaker had 102 yards through the air and a pair of passing touchdowns.

Defensively for Mansfield, Antonio Green Jr. and Matt Machmer each had their third interceptions of the season. Jackson Taylor led the team in tackles with 16.

Mansfield's defense made the first statement as Green Jr. intercepted a Cornell (0-5, 0-3 CSFL North) pass in the redzone.

That lead to a nine-play drive that was punctuated as Quaker found Brady Deneen out of the backfield for the 14-yard touchdown. Nolan Zona broke the Mansfield sprint football career extra points records to give the Mountaineers the 7-0 lead.

Mansfield and Cornell traded turnovers and both defenses had big stops before finally the Big Red was able to get on the board with a 32-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.

Mansfield was stopped on fourth and four on the Cornell nine-yard line with 19 seconds remaining to keep the score 7-3 at the half.

 The Big Red added another field goal in the third quarter to again cut the lead to 7-6.

Mansfield responded as a 40-yard kick return set up a seven-play drive encapsulated by a Bellows 17-yard touchdown run, making the score 13-6.

On the ensuing Cornell drive, the Mountie defense forced a fumble giving the offence a chance to grow the lead. They were able to on a 31-yard pass from Quaker to Machmer, to bring the lead to 20-6.

In the final five minutes of the fourth quarter, Bellows was able to punch in his second score on a 21-yard rush to increase the lead to 27-6.

The Big Red had some fight scoring there first touchdown of the game on a three-yard pass making the score 27-13.

The Mountaineers were able to run out the clock to take the game and take the win in the Josh Palmer Pigskin Classic.
