SPARKILL, N.Y. – The Mansfield Mountaineers sprint football team (3-1) delivered a dominant road performance winning 34-18, on Friday, Oct. 17 against St. Thomas Aquinas (1-4).
Weston Bellows had 75 yards passing and two touchdowns to go along with 59 yards on the ground.
Jackson Taylor lead the Mounties defensively with seven tackles.
Adiel Johnson and
Ben Fitch each had a sack.
The game was also significant as
Molly McLeer made history, becoming the first woman to play in the CSFL. McLeer played on the offensive line.
The Mountaineers controlled the game from the start, striking first late in the opening quarter when Bellows powered in for a 2-yard rushing touchdown to give Mansfield a 6-0 lead.
In the second quarter,
Steven Rosado extended the advantage with a 1-yard touchdown run, followed by a
Nolan Zona extra point to make the score 13-0.
St. Thomas Aquinas answered immediately with an 85-yard kickoff return to place them on the board.
Mansfield responded on the next drive as Rosado connected with
Brady Deneen for a 5-yard touchdown pass to send the Mounties into halftime ahead 20-6.
Bellows and
Matt Machmer linked up for a 34-yard touchdown in the third quarter, widening the gap to 27-6.
David Martinez capped Mansfield's offensive surge in the fourth with a 2-yard rushing touchdown to make it 34-6.
The Spartans added two late touchdowns through the air, but the Mountaineers' strong start and balanced attack secured the win.
Both two-point conversion attempts failed, and Mansfield's defense held firm down the stretch to close out the win.
The Mountaineer defense limited the Spartans' offense for most of the game, forcing several key stops and containing the ground attack before the late scores.
