No. 10 Mountaineers Down Bobcats in Conference Opener

The Mansfield field hockey team opened conference action on Saturday afternoon.

MANSFIELD, Pa. - Behind Jenna Duke's second two goal game, the No. 10 Mansfield Mountaineer field hockey team (5-3, 1-0 PSAC) welcomed Frostburg State (3-4, 0-1 PSAC) to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) as the Mounties spoiled the Bobcats opening game in their new conference, 2-0.

Duke scored the first goal of the game, just four minutes into the contest, slapping a shot into the back of the cage to take the early 1-0 Mountaineer lead.

In the final minute and a half, the Bobcats held strong against the other five shots and three penalty corners in the quarter by Mansfield.

The two conference members dished out back and forth shots with five shots in the first five minutes, but no success for either as a quiet final ten minutes took the Mounties to halftime with the 1-0 advantage.

To begin the second half, Frostburg State earned their first penalty corner to create pressure on the host and a created attack in the final minute of the third quarter had the Bobcats advancing down the field, but August Lewis allowed no chances with a crucial save to end the third.

In the final fifteen minutes, Mansfield began the quarter with two penalty corners and two shots from Melanie Esh, who totaled six on the day, but the Bobcats backs were able to keep it out of the cage.

It took another penalty corner to set up a pass from Kenedy Stroup to Duke for the insurance goal for the Mounties to grab the 2-0 victory to open up conference action.

Lewis had eight saves on the afternoon and Esh led the team with five shots on goal. Duke now has five goals, two assists, and 12 points in the last four games.
