Three Score on the Day as No. 9 Mountaineers Defeat Saints

The Mansfield field hockey team opened nonconference action on Thursday afternoon.

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - On Thursday (Oct. 3) afternoon, the No. 9 Mansfield Mountaineer field hockey team (6-3) competed in a neutral site contest with Maryville University Saints (4-3), with the Mounties coming out on top, 4-1, behind three different goal scorers.

The attackers' game plan succeeded right away with Ella Du Plessis scoring the first goal for Mansfield in the first four minutes of action.

Maryville responded in the first quarter with a blast off their first penalty corner to even the score after the first fifteen.

Penalty corners started piling up for the Mounties, with two in the early minutes of the second quarter, with one leading to a Jenna Duke score to retake the 2-1 lead.

Kenedy Stroup doubled the goal in the quarter, sending her first of the season into the cage to take a strong 3-1 advantage into halftime for the Mountaineers.

When the Saints thought the momentum settled after break, Du Plessis launched her second goal of the game into goal for the 4-1 lead just five minutes into the third quarter. Three early penalty corners launched the attack for Mansfield, leading to the final goal on the day.

August Lewis sent back four saves, including three in the final quarter as the Mounties eased to a 4-1 victory on the day.

For Maryville, five players landed a shot on goal and Dorothy Fife earned two defensive saves on the afternoon.
