Rueppel’s Early Goal Earns Draw at Roberts Wesleyan

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Mansfield soccer (0-1-3) drew their third of the first four games on Wednesday (Sept. 18) night against the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks (2-2-1).

The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second minute when Taylar Luckenbill sent a long free kick to the foot of Katelyn Rueppel, who slotted the opening goal home for Mansfield.

In the 19th minute, RWU had their best chance of the half when their cross found a forward at the top of the box whose volley attempt went wide left of the goal.

Rueppel had a chance for her second moments later after getting around the Roberts keeper but the RWU defense cleared it away before the Mounties could convert on the opportunity.

With under 10 to go in the first half, Roberts had another opportunity from a cross that the RWU striker got her head on but Mansfield goalkeeper Alyssa Shuman snared it out of the air to shut down the chance.

Early in the second half, RWU had two one-on-ones with Shuman but each missed high over the net to keep the Mountaineer lead at one.

The pressure on the Mansfield defense continued as Roberts Wesleyan got the equalizer in the 52nd minute tying the game at 1-1.

After the goal, neither team could create many chances until Roberts Wesleyan's free-kick with just over 11 minutes to go struck the crossbar but the ball was cleared away by the Mountaineer back-line before further danger.

Another RWU chance came after a beautiful through ball allowed for another one-on-one with the Mountie keeper but Shuman was able to make the sure-handed save.

The Mansfield defense was able to hold off the pressing RWU attack and hold on for the 1-1 draw.

Alyssa Shuman finished the game with 7 saves.
