Nick Mattis Named Mansfield Cross Country and Track & Field Head Coach

MANSFIELD, Pa.-  Athletic Director Peggy Carl has announced Nick Mattis as the next head coach of the Mansfield Mountaineers men's and women's cross country and track and field programs.
 
Mattis will assume the role on Sept. 23.
 
"We are so happy to welcome Nick Mattis to the Mountie Family as Mansfield's next head cross country and track and field coach" Carl stated. "His experiences as a head coach will help to propel our programs forward, provide stability to our student-athletes, and grow all programs to back to levels of health. For the first time in a long time, Mansfield cross country and track and field will operate from singular leadership and Coach Mattis is the right person to provide this leadership."
 
"Mountaineer Athletics is thrilled to welcome Coach Mattis and his family to Mansfield" said Gretchen Sechrist, Mansfield Campus Administrator and Interim Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education. "His experience, leadership, and vision will greatly benefit our student-athletes and will position the Mountaineer track & field and cross country programs for success." 
 
"I am very excited to be joining Mansfield." Mattis stated.  "I look forward to the challenge of rebuilding the cross country and track and field programs to a much higher level." 
 
Mattis comes to Mansfield after spending 17 years at De Anza College in California as the head cross country and track and field head coach. He developed much success at De Anza, coaching 50 All-Americans and seven state champions. 
 
Mattis led De Anza to four top five finishes and 19 top ten finishes at the CCCAA State Championships in cross country and track and field. His teams have earned 17 Coast Conference team titles and four regional championships. The men's track and field team earned a fourth place finish this past season at the CCCA Championships.
 
Before De Anza, Mattis had stops at Montana State and Danville Area Community College (Ill.). He received a bachelor's degree from Saint Ambrose University in 1997 and a master's from Western Illinois in 2006.
