BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - For their first game back in their home state, the Mansfield Mountaineer field hockey team (3-1) traveled to No. 8 Bloomsburg (5-1) for a nonconference game on Sunday afternoon, which saw the Huskies come out on top, 1-0.
Much of the first half saw the two teams battle, deadlocked at 0-0 heading into halftime.
After two early shots on goal from
Melanie Esh and
Katie Marchiani, Bloomsburg responded with the last four shots in the first half, including a slapper with 15 seconds remaining, but
August Lewis stopped three shots to keep the game tied after 30 minutes.
Her third save moved Lewis into the top ten all time in program records.
The Huskies used the end of half momentum and their home field to start with a second half sprint, posting three shots in the first seven minutes of the third quarter, only for the third shot to bounce out and onto a Bloomsburg stick to slap into the cage for the first goal of the game.
With 43 seconds left in the quarter,
Kenedy Stroup sent a last minute shot towards goal, but could not find the equalizer as the host took the 1-0 lead into the final fifteen.
Mansfield earned an early penalty corner, but found no result into the cage, blasting shots towards the posts.
The host remained vigilant to score an insurance goal, grabbing a penalty corner with three minutes remaining, but left the door open for the Mounties.
With under a minute remaining, the Mountaineers made one final stride with Stroup running into the box, met by the Huskie defense and could not draw a penalty corner or room for a shot, as No. 8 Bloomsburg defended their home turf, 1-0.
