Mounties Close Out 2024 Season with Bloomsburg

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Mansfield Mountaineers baseball team (15-31, 8-24 PSAC East) finished their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division series with Bloomsburg (16-32, 11-21 PSAC East) to cap off the 2024 season on Friday afternoon.

Game 1: Mansfield 2 - Bloomsburg 1

Game One starter Eric Gustofson made quick work of the Huskies through his first three-innings allowing just one hit and striking out three. 

Mansfield got on the board in the bottom of the third with an infield single by Ryan Scott. 

In the top of the fifth, Bloomsburg drove a long fly ball into the left field gap looking to tie the game but the relay of Scott to Jeffrey Coakley to Jackson Halla nailed the runner at the plate to maintain the 1-0 Mountaineer lead.

The Huskies tied game one with a home run in the top of the sixth to end Gustofson's stellar day on the mound.

Gustofson finished with 5+ innings pitched, allowed four hits, one run, and struck out five.

Ryan Sekulski put the Mountaineers back on top in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double to left-center to score Jacob Houtz. 

Joseph Gleason who relieved Gustofson in the sixth earned his first season win throwing the final two innings and striking out four batters. 

Game 2: Bloomsburg 9 – Mansfield 6 

Mansfield took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to left field from Houtz.

The Huskies utilized a squeeze play to tie the game at one in the top of the second.

Bloomsburg took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third with a two-run shot over the left-center field wall.

Shay Gustafson brought back a home run in the fourth to keep Mansfield in the game, the Huskies did add one in the inning to extend their lead to 4-1.

The Mounties got one back in the bottom half of the fourth to cut the deficit to two.

BU added two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-2 advantage.

Coakley added another Mansfield run with an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth. 

Bloomsburg pushed across another three runs over the last two innings to take a 9-3 lead.

In his final collegiate at-bat, Shertzer roped a two-RBI double to headline a valiant seventh-inning effort but the Mountaineers fell in game two 9-6.
