Mounties Finish Conference Series with West Chester

The Mounties finished another conference series on Sunday afternoon.

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Mansfield Mountaineers baseball team (7-22, 3-17 PSAC East) finished out their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division series at West Chester (23-5-1, 12-5 PSAC East) on Sunday afternoon as the Golden Rams locked down their series sweep, taking game one, 9-1, and game two, 19-3.  

Game 1: West Chester 9 – Mansfield 1 

WCU started off hot from the batter's circle, dropping five runs in the first inning.

Another hot streak of hitting gave four more in the second inning to the host as the Golden Rams increased their lead to 9-0.

The solo Mountie RBI came from Zachary Shertzer in the top of the seventh to score Shay Gustafson, but West Chester shut down any chance for more to win game one, 9-1.

In relief, Luke Payne pitched 2.1 innings, striking out four and not allowing any runs.

Game 2: West Chester 19 – Mansfield 3 

West Chester continued their success from the plate, posting 11 runs in the top of the first to hold a commanding advantage in pursuit to complete the sweep..

Through the next three innings, the Golden Rams added seven more runs to create an 18-0 edge heading into the final three innings.

Jeffrey Coakley stopped the shutout, scoring the first Mounties run off a wild pitch in the top of the fifth.

WCU added another run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 19-1.

Zack Garrity scored off a David Kilroy groundout and Gustafsons' RBI single to score Ryan Verbonitz were the last two runs for Mansfield before West Chester closed the door on the series and grabbed game two, 19-3.

UP NEXT: 
The Mounties head to Slippery Rock for a two-game series on Tuesday, April 9. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
