MANSFIELD, Pa. – To finish off the eight-game week, the Mansfield Mountaineers softball team (12-26, 3-25 PSAC East) hosted Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opponent Shepherd University (29-23, 12-20 PSAC East) on Sunday afternoon as the Rams grabbed game one, 12-0, but the Mounties defeated Shepherd in game two, 2-0.
GAME 1: Shepherd 12 – Mansfield 0
Through the first three innings, Shepherd posted the first three runs of the afternoon, with three RBI singles.
A solo shot in the top of the sixth brought the Ram lead to 4-0.
Shepherd capitalized in the final inning, sending eight batters across home plate to cement a 12-0 advantage before earning their 12th PSAC victory of the season.
Caydence Macik, Gabby Drumm, and Natalie Blackstone were all credited with a hit for the Mounties in game one.
GAME 2: Mansfield 2 – Shepherd 0
A strong defensive start held the two eastern members scoreless through the first two innings, with Annabella Putnam striking out the side in the top of the second.
Mansfield earned the first run off a Fallon Kelley RBI single in the bottom of the third, scoring Kayla Vonstein as the Mounties held the 1-0 edge.
Putnam put on a clinic through five innings, striking out seven and allowing only three hits at that point.
Aubrey Reinert doubled the score for Mansfield in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Shannon Perlungher to hold the late 2-0 advantage.
Putnam completed her complete shutout victory, finishing with ten strikeouts and stopping the attempted comeback by the Rams in the final inning.
