MANSFIELD, Pa. – On Tuesday (Apr. 23) afternoon, the Mansfield Mountaineers softball team (12-28, 3-27 PSAC East) hosted the nationally ranked Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opponent in No. 15 East Stroudsburg University (38-12, 20-8 PSAC East) and the Warriors proved the number on their name, sweeping the doubleheader, 6-3 and 4-2.
GAME 1: No. 15 East Stroudsburg 6 – Mansfield 3
ESU put together a strong 3-0 start in the top of the second inning behind a two run double and a passed ball. Another run passed off an RBI double, allowing the Warriors to hold the 4-0 edge.
Through an RBI double by Kayla Vonstein, Kaelyn Watson stepped on home plate for the first Mountie run in the bottom of the fifth. Sarah Shupp capitalized on two runners in scoring position with a two-run single, scoring Watson and Carly Wywoda to limit the damage at 4-3.
East Stroudsburg prevailed in the close Eastern Division battle, dropping two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to claim the 6-3 victory.
GAME 2: No. 15 East Stroudsburg 4 – Mansfield 2
Vonstein eclipsed her 100th career hit as a Mountie, with a two-run blast to right field, driving in Wywoda and Madison Bailey to take the early 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the third.
The Warriors grabbed two runs in the next half inning to even the contest at 2-2.
Annabella Putnam kept ESU at bay, holding this tied matchup with the nationally ranked opponent through five innings.
To start the sixth inning, back-to-back at bats drove in two runs for East Stroudsburg to hold the 4-2 edge before facing the final two innings of Moutaineer offense.
This was all the Warrior defense needed to silence Helen Lutes Field to claim the Tuesday doubleheader, 4-2.
