MANSFIELD, Pa. –To start a week of eight games, Mansfield Mountaineers softball team (11-21, 2-20 PSAC East) hosted Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opponent Millersville (20-17, 11-9 PSAC East), but the Marauders ruined the Mounties return to Helen Lutes Field on Monday afternoon, 6-4 and 5-3.
GAME 1: Millersville 6 – Mansfield 4
To lead off the afternoon, Kayla Vonstein sent over her second lead-off home run of the season and her third on the year to give the Mountaineers the early 1-0 lead after the first inning.
With a fast double play in the second, Danielle Goff and the Iron Mountie defense held the opponent scoreless through the first two innings.
Millersville took control with a three run third inning off an RBI single, a double steal, and a sacrifice fly to give the Marauders the 3-1 lead after the third inning.
With a comeback chance fueled, the Mounties tied the contest up in the bottom of the fourth at 3-3. With a sacrifice fly by Fallon Kelley, Caydence Macik stood as the second run and Carly Wywoda delivered the game-tying home run as her solo shot stands as her second of the season.
Mansfield earned the lead once again off an RBI single from Gabby Drumm, to score Vonstein as the 4-3 appeared on the scoreboard.
The Marauders closed out any chance for a comeback, adding three runs in the seventh and held on to win game one, 6-4.
GAME 2: Millersville 5 – Mansfield 3
To start off game two, Millersville drove in the first run off an RBI single to take the 1-0 lead after the top of the second.
With Melissa Demo and Kaelyn Watson on base, Caydence Macik delivered her second long ball of the season, smacking the three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth to hold the 3-1 edge.
Even with a hit to the foot, Annabella Putnam worked her magic in the circle as she and the defense worked out of bases loaded in the top of the sixth to keep the Mountie advantage, heading into the final inning.
Millersville copied their game one script and spoiled the return to Helen Lutes Field, posting four runs in the top of the seventh inning to claim the Monday doubleheader, 5-3.
