Mansfield Wins Weekend Series Against Emory & Henry

EMORY, Va. - The Mountaineers baseball team (10-24) finished off their weekend series against the Emory & Henry College Wasps (8-33) on Sunday afternoon.

Ryan King picked up his third win of the season throwing 5.0 innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits.

The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead scoring five runs in the second inning. Jeffrey Coakley got the scoring started when he doubled to left center to bring home Jacob Houtz. Logan Wells singled down the right field line to increase the Mansfield lead. Zachary Shertzer walked with the bases loaded before Ryan Scott capped off the inning with a two-RBI single.

Emory & Henry responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 5-4 game.

In the top of the fifth, the Mounties tacked on another thanks to a Houtz RBI double, putting Mansfield up by two.

With the game separated by just one run in the seventh, the Mountaineers scored two to give themselves a three-run advantage. Houtz once again put the runs on the board with a two-RBI double to right-center making the score 8-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Wasps scored two runs with a solo home run and an RBI single, setting the stage for a tense final two innings.

Emory & Henry threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth but Joseph Gleason slammed the door. Gleason struck out the final two batters of the game, locking down an 8-7 victory for the Mounties. Gleason earned the save by recording the final nine outs, ending his day allowing just one run and striking out four.
