EMORY, Va.-
Zachary Shertzer and
Jacob Houtz combined for eight home runs as the Mansfield Mountaineers baseball team spit a high scoring doubleheader with non-conference Emory & Henry College on Saturday, April 13.
Game One- Mansfield 22 Emory & Henry 11
Mansfield won the first game 22-11, that being the most runs Mansfield has scored in a single game since 2006. The Mounties hit seven home runs including two grand slams in the game.
The Mounties got off to a quick start with a leadoff home run by Shertzer. Houtz match with his own solo shot to give the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Mansfield's bats exploded in the second inning for eight runs. Shae Gustofson opened it up with an RBI single to left field. Shertzer lanched his second home run on his second at-bat adding three more runs.
Ryan Verbonitz put an exclamation point on the inning with a grand slam to give Mansfield the 10-0 lead.
Emory & Henry tallied two runs in the fourth but the Mountie bats took back charge in the fifth inning. Verbonitz drove in a run to get the scoring started. The next batter
Jeffrey Coakley launched his own home run to center field to bring the score to 13-2 at the end of the inning.
The following inning,
Cole Serfass (two RBI double), Verbonitz and Cokley drove in runs making the score 17-2.
The Wasps had a great bottom of the sixth inning tallying eight runs of their own to make the score 17-10.
Shertzer cranked his third home run in the seventh inning. Houtz in the final inning hit his second home run of the game, and the second Mansfield grand slam of the day. The Mounties took the game 22-11.
Austin Lewis gets the win on the mound, tossing 10 strikeouts in five innings. Verbonitz had six RBI on the day and Shertzer and Houtz had five each.
Game Two- Emory & Henry 12- Mansfield 8
The Wasps were able to jump on the Mountaineers early in the second game, scoring four runs in the opening inning.
The Mounties struck back in the second inning. Houtz homered for the third time on the day. A wild pitch brought in the second run of the inning. Shertzer then continued his incredible day with a three RBI homer, his fourth of the day. Mansfield led 5-4.
The lead was short lived as the Wasps regained the lead, plating two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Shertzer and Houtz drove in runs through the fouth and fifth innings but Mansfield couldn't keep pace with Emory & Henry as the score was 12-7 in favor of the wasps heading to the final inning.
Shertzer led off with his fifth home run of the day, but the Mansfield offense stalled out droping game two 12-8.
Shertzer accounted for five RBI in game two. Giving him a whole day stat line of 7-11 Five home runs and 10 RBI.
Mansfield finished the series with the Wasps on Sunday, April 14, with a nine inning game.
